For those of you familiar to with the works of Jeff Cooper the term "surprise break" is already the most important entry in your accuracy vocabulary. For the rest of you, here's Colonel Cooper explaining things.
In recent years the AR-15 accessory market has exploded, and in the process of upgrading a poodle shooter the trigger is an often overlooked step. This is unfortunate because the stock AR-15 trigger is a mushy disaster wholly incapable of achieving a surprise break. Lucky for us, Geissele Automatics has solved that problem with a series of triggers capable of three levels of surprise breaks: carrot, candycane, and icicle.
According to Geissele, carrot, candycane, and icicle are actual technical terms corresponding with 2 lbs, 1.2 lbs, 0.3-0.9 lbs. (seriously, look at their manual). They achieve these crisp breaks using EDM (Electric Discharge Machining) which eliminates the tool marks associated with traditional milling procedures. The ultra smooth surface left behind by the EDM sparks is more durable and results in a surprise break that is measurably superior to a traditionally produced trigger. You can actually see the crisp icicle break on the chart below, along with the mushy disaster that is the traditional AR-15 trigger.
Here's how EDM works:
Dog House Outdoors is proud to offer the entire Geissele line of two-stage triggers from the $170 SSA (Super Semi-Automatic) to the, fully adjustable, $279 High Speed National Match.
